Heavily inspired by Disneyland in California, the park opened in Japan in 1961. In fact, it was originally built to be a Disneyland but towards the end of development, Disney and the Japanese owner had a disagreement. As a result, Nara created its own characters and theme. It closed in 2006 after years of dwindling numbers on the heels of Tokyo Disneyland.
