Universal Studios Florida History
Universal Studios Orlando is owned and operated by NBC Universal and features numerous rides, attractions, and live shows. Universal Studios Florida was the first component of the larger Universal Orlando Resort to open, ranking eleventh in the world and sixth in North America for attendance among amusement parks in 2019 while hosting approximately 10.9 million visitors.
In addition to the theme park aspect, early design focused on providing guests with a behind-the-scenes look at film and television.
A significant portion of the park operated as an active production studio. As producers and filmmakers showed no interest in filming onsite in Orlando, Universal’s approach evolved, transitioning to a first-person perspective for its heavily themed rides, areas, and attractions.
The resort eventually expanded by introducing two additional theme parks, Universal’s Islands of Adventure in 1999 and Volcano Bay in 2017, as well as the restaurant and retail epicenter Universal CityWalk, which also opened in 1999.
FAQ
Is 1 day enough for Universal Studios Florida?
One day can be enough for Universal Studios Florida, but it’s tight. You’ll need to prioritize attractions and arrive early.
With careful planning, you can experience major rides like Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, and The Simpsons Ride. However, you may miss some shows, character meet-and-greets, or smaller attractions.
For a more relaxed experience and to see everything, consider a two-day visit.
How many Universal Studio parks are there in Florida?
There are three Universal Studio parks in Florida: Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay. Universal Studios Florida focuses on movie and TV-themed attractions, Islands of Adventure offers thrill rides and immersive lands, and Volcano Bay is a water theme park.
All three are part of the Universal Orlando Resort complex. A fourth park, Universal Epic Universe, is scheduled to open in 2025.
Which Universal Studios is better?
Universal Studios Florida is generally considered better than Universal Studios Hollywood due to its larger size and more diverse offerings. Florida’s resort includes two theme parks (Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure), a water park (Volcano Bay), and CityWalk entertainment district.
It offers more rides, attractions, and immersive themed areas like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. However, Hollywood has the unique Studio Tour, so the “better” park depends on individual preferences.
What are the three parks in Universal Studios?
The three* parks at Universal Orlando Resort are:
1. Universal Studios Florida: Movie and TV-themed attractions
2. Islands of Adventure: Thrill rides and immersive lands
3. Volcano Bay: Water theme park
Each park offers unique experiences. Universal Studios Florida features rides based on popular franchises, Islands of Adventure has more intense thrill rides and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, and Volcano Bay provides water-based attractions around a central volcano theme.
*A fourth park, Universal Epic Universe, is scheduled to open in 2025.
